Litigation, Legislation, Government
- The US Supreme Court agreed this week to hear two gun cases consolidated into one, Viramontes v. Cook County and Grant v. Higgins — both appeals challenging bans of the AR-15 and similar semiautomatic firearms in Cook County, IL (Chicago) and Connecticut, on Second and Fourteenth Amendment grounds. Both bans were upheld by their respective Circuit Courts of Appeal. Similar laws are in place in about a dozen states.
- SCOTUS also declined to hear a case brought by the SAF to enforce the firearm carry rights of young adults in Pennsylvania. That means SAF’s victory in Third Circuit Court of Appeals is now final and adults 18-20 years of age now have recognized carry rights. The Court also declined to hear several other cases about gun restrictions for this group of young adults. Look for this issue to come back to SCOTUS.
- Related: The US District Court for the Western District of Missouri has ruled that Jackson County’s ban on handgun purchases by those under 21 violated the Second Amendment.
- As promised, the US Department of Justice has filed lawsuits against two states for unconstitutional restrictions on sales of certain types of guns. In Virginia, the department is targeting a law that banned the sale of semiautomatic weapons. In California, it is suing over a newly enacted law that restricts the sale of some firearms with a trigger that could be modified into a “machinegun-convertible pistol” (Glocks).

(Former) NRA Foundation finally reveals its trustees
- The current list of the NRA/1791 Foundation Board of Trustees is as follows: Tom King, president; Ronnie Barrett, vice president; Barbara Rumpel; Blaine Wade; Bob Barr; Charles Cotton; Eb Wilkinson; Jay Wallace; Joel Friedman; Scott Bach; Barry Partlo; Cindi Flannagan (sic). Of the trustees listed, the following members maintained bios and/or had an affiliation with the Strong NRA [“old guard”] slate of candidates in past NRA Board of Directors elections and were directors: Tom King, Bob Barr, Blaine Wade, Eb Wilkinson, Jay Wallace, and Joel Friedman. Who else was a member of the NRA Board of Directors? Ronnie Barrett, Barbara Rumpel, and Charles Cotton. Jay Wallace and Scott Bach are the only two current members of both the NRA Board of Directors and NRA (1791) Foundation Board of Trustees. I am unimpressed. The battle between the NRA and the Foundation continues.
