The US Army is soliciting an upgrade package (designated the M4A1+) for the M4A1 Carbine. They say the complete weapon has to weigh no more than 8 lbs. empty. An 8 lb. .22 to carry 24/7 in wartime. I’m not impressed. The original AR-15 weighed less than 6 lbs. with empty magazine.
