Seventy years ago this week, on Aug. 6 and Aug. 9, the US dropped atomic bombs on Hiroshima and Nagasaki, respectively, convincing Japan to unconditionally surrender on Aug. 14, ending WWII.

Even liberal magazine Slate admits that the US armed citizenry would keep a world superpower at bay.
